Red Rock Canyon Run April 22, 2017
By Dennis Sullivan
Everyone arrived at the Ranger station off of Abbot Road and highway 14, by 9:05 on Saturday morning. We had 12 vehicles this year. A little larger group than usual but a very enthusiastic group. In our midst were Erv and Cathy Hunt, James Sullivan and son Owen, Kyle Cox, Mike and Carol Kelly, Bob Day and Sally Kinsey, the Vique’s: Andy, Lucas, Jacob, Emily and Naomi, Doug and Rich Francisco, Dale Rice, Will and Jacob Lawson, Tim Thomas and friend Doug Tabor, and leading was Dennis and Emmie. We left the Ranger station at 9:15 AM and proceeded to the Dove Springs area north on Highway 14, about 6 miles. We turned right and stopped here to air down and ready the vehicles for the trail. We then proceeded northeast through the Opal mining area to Cudahy Camp. This is an old mining camp that has long ago been abandoned. Here Doug discovered that his right front tire had been absolutely shredded by the rocks. After the tire was changed, Doug could now think about those new mud Toyo’s he’s been wanting to buy. We proceeded from Cudahy to EP30 then on to EP26/EP15 to Colorado Camp where we had lunch. After this hardy break be proceeded along the El Paso mountains to Sheep Springs for a well deserved break from the pounding trail. After a short stop, we left Sheep springs for another mining camp down EP 11 and then on to the Red Rock Randsburg road. Our trip was a little longer than I planned but we had no serious breakdowns through the entire day. After the run about 12-14 of the participants had a Pot-Luck dinner at the Sullivan’s campsite. Great day of wheeling with this awesome group.
